New BDes(Hons) Interaction Design

back to school

I’m back at college today, which feels great I have to say. Our studio’s been re-built in a much better layout, we have new windows, and a bunch of eager new first years — who I’ve not met properly yet because we (second years as we are now) are all frantically trying to finish our dissertations to be handed in on Friday.

I just spotted that Tim Simpson — who graduated from Design Products this year — has a page of this own on the Design Museum’s website. Nice one, Tim!

A quote from his interview, helping to dispel the myth of RCA students all being superbeings or offspring of renowned artists/ designers:

I grew up Swindon, which already poses a number of problems as a practicing designer. [...] I suppose my awareness of design was a fairly gradual one, but I must in some way attribute it to the Argos catalogue and a good box of Lego.

He’s also in the long list on the right, somewhere between Peter Saville and Ettore Sottsass, which isn’t a bad place to be. I did a bit of electronics and programming work for Tim on his “subversive sightseeing” piece (shown below), so it’s good to see him getting the recognition he deserves.

RCA graduates Phil Worthington and Peter Marigold are also represented on the site, both of them with interesting interviews as well. All these guys are on the site as part of the Design Mart exhibition, featuring work by a selection of 7 recent design graduates. Runs until 7 January 2007.
