Mobile Music Workshop day 1

So, I’m here in wonderful Brighton for the third international mobile music workshop.

Michael Bull’s keynote on ipods and automobiles got things started nicely. I’ve never been all that comfortable with the humanities convention of “reading” your paper, but he has an excellent style of reading plus commentary that worked really well, particularly given the wide range of backgrounds of the audience – artists, designers, HCI people, software hackers, even a couple of musicians. ;-)

It was great to chat to Ben Russell again – it’s been a while (a year in fact – since the PLAN event at the ICA). Also good to meet Thor Magnusson of IXI software, who it turns out is doing his PhD here… I’m just reading some of his stuff: Intelligent Tools in Music (artificial), ixi software: The Interface as Instrument (NIME 2005), ixi software: Open Controllers for Open Source Audio Software (ICMC 2005).

Semi-random links to some more people: Mark Shepard (U Buffalo), Steve Bull (Cutlass), Tim Cole (Tao group/SSEYO), Atau Tanaka (Sony CSL Paris), Sarah Kettley (Napier Univ, Edinburgh), Stephan Baumann [blog] (DFKI, Kaiserslautern), David Jimison (GA tech), Richard Widerberg (University of Art and Design in Helsinki).

[ Tak så mycket to Richard for making available his recording of Michael Bull's talk at this year's Transmediale. Also another Tak for being disappointed with the event in general - makes me feel better about not being able to go... ]

I also enjoyed chatting to people for whom I can’t find current websites: Akseli Anttila of Nokia Design, Arianna Bassoli from LSE (ex-MLE), and art clay of ETZH Zürich.

Finally some links to software mentioned in the discussions: WIGLE.NET, wifimaps.com, placelab.
